Happy October! NEWS

Dear Students,

Happy October to All! Here’s an overview through Oct 20th.

Class tomorrow will begin immediately with a film. Please arrive and be seated at least a couple of minutes before the start. From now on I expect everyone to be on time.

This is still Week 5 (Progressive Era, 1890s-1920s). The assignments for this week have been extended until next Tuesday.

Subjects to be treated in class tomorrow:

  • Imperialism in the 1890s.
  • Robber Barons, Philanthropists, and Anti Trust.
  • Progressive Movements (start).

Next week is Week 6:

  • Homework through Tue 6 Oct: Finish everything from Week 5. That includes the primary sources! All of you are urged to do at least one of the HW options.
  • Before Thursday 8 Oct: Read American Yawp, Chapter 21 (“The Great Depression”). Full chapter and primary sources, please. Quiz likely.

Beyond that:

  • Remember there is only one class in Week 7. Mark this down in your calendars: No class on Tue 13 Oct, because CCNY will follow a Monday schedule. Thu 15 Oct we will continue with the 1930s and the start of World War II.
  • Midterm will be on Tue 20 Oct (Week 8). It will cover items from Week 3 (Civil War and Reconstruction) through whatever point we have reached on Week 7. I will be writing it after classes on Week 7, so please do not ask me “What’s on the Midterm?” The only way to get ready for it is to do the assigned readings and attend classes. I will circulate an old midterm for practice.
  • Halfway point: After the Midterm we will have exactly 14 classes left in the semester.
  • Final Exam: This is required by the College. I have no choice. Date and time are not yet official, but will be listed soon. Please do not make any plans for travel before the end of finals week. Our date will likely be on Thu 17 Dec.
  • TIMES FOR FINAL EXAMS WILL BE DIFFERENT FROM USUAL CLASS TIMES.
  • Finals will run for 2 hours and 15 minutes.

    LIKELY TIMES:
For Hist 241-M, the 11am class:
    10:30 AM-12:45 PM Thu 17 Dec.

For Hist 241-P, the 2pm class:
    1:00-3:15 PM Thu 17 Dec.

Again, almost certain but not yet announced. I will post all on the Main Schedule once certain.

All the best,

NEL
